Quiet Corner: Embracing Life, Stories, and Creativity

By

Dear reader, welcome to my blog, I am very grateful that you’re here! My name is Sophie and I talk…a lot. When I was younger, I talked so much that I’d get sent to the quiet corner or as you’d say in my native language (Papiamento) skina keto.

“Sophie bai sinta keto den skina” 𖦹 “Sophie go sit quietly in the corner”

I would turn any seating arrangement into a networking event, and I wanted to talk to everyone about everything. Moving me away from my friends didn’t stop me, though; I would just try and befriend my next unlucky neighbour. By high school, the teachers liked me enough to put up with the constant chatter, but let’s be honest, being opinionated and enthusiastic isn’t always celebrated, especially as a young woman.

I’ve been told my whole life that I am â€śa lot,” that I come off â€śstrong.” As a kid, it was cute. As I got older, not so much. I tried being quiet, mysterious, the chill and cool type… but that never stuck. The second someone brought up a topic I loved, said something rude or made a funny joke, my vow of silence was over.

Then came 2020. We all retreated indoors, and for the first time, I chose my own quiet corner. Movies, anime, TV shows, painting, Percy Jackson and way too many K-pop music videos, I discovered new obsessions and found comfort in old ones. Fast forward: I have moved from my small island in the Caribbean to the Netherlands, did a study abroad in Austria, started writing my psychology bachelor’s thesis, found love, travelled whenever I could afford it, and throughout the years, I have held those same comforts close, through my many new phases of life.

Born and raised in Aruba, a child of a beautifully mixed background, I guess you could say I was destined to collect stories and share them. And here I am thousands of kilometers away in the Netherlands, still talking, still curious, and still craving sunshine.

My grandmother or Taita in Lebanese, enjoying a slice of the Knafeh we just made. Where my Aruban and Lebanese roots meet in sweetness.

About This Blog

Now in my 20s, I’ve learned to embrace both sides: the talker and the introvert who loves her little online escape. This blog is that escape. A space for conversations, long thoughts, random anecdotes, and meaningful yapping. I have opinions (lots), and I want to share them with with you!

A space where we are not actually quiet, and never “too loud” or “too much”, where silence is optional and rants are encouraged.

I’m not a professional writer, photographer, or artist…But I am a passionate amateur. I love trying things, learning as I go, and sharing that process honestly.

Quiet Corner 𖦹 Skina Keto is both a personal blog and a creative portfolio, a space to share my words, visuals, and digital projects. The name is a nod to my Aruban roots, grounding this space in the language and culture that shaped me, while also reflecting something universal: finding a corner to create, reflect, and connect ( About page).

What to Expect

You can expect a mix of things: stories about movies, music, books, culture, food, rising iced coffee prices, identity, and the weird beauty of figuring life out in your 20s. Some posts might be deep; others might just be me rambling about something that has completely captured my attention that week.

In a world that’s increasingly online, I want this space to feel connected, human, and real. Quiet Corner 𖦹 Skina Keto is my way of blending personal expression with professional growth, a place to learn and to create.

So, welcome to my little corner of the world. Thank you for being here, I hope you’ll stick around, grow with me, and look forward to the next update, imperfections and all!
